Die Software der beiden Kin-Handys ist auf Social Network-Fans ausgerichtet, allerdings haben Verzögerungen bei der Entwicklung zu einer teilweise veralteten Technik dazu geführt, dass die Verkaufszahlen sehr niedrig liegen - auch der Preis war anscheinend für viele Kunden zu hoch. Daher hat Microsoft die Kin-Serie zum 30. Juni eingestellt.

"We have made the decision to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and we will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones."

Somit kommt Kin also nicht nach Europa und geplante Geräte werden nicht mehr umgesetzt. Wie schlecht der Absatz des Geräts gewesen sein muss, dass Microsoft es vor der Veröffentlichung in Europa vom Markt nimmt, kann man nur ahnen.

Über eine Facebook-Zählung ist jetzt die Zahl der verkauften Kin-Smartphones bekannt geworden, ganze 8.810 Stück hat Microsoft an den Kunden gebracht. Die Zahlen dürften relativ genau sein, da jedes Kin-Gerät sich automatisch bei Facebook anmeldet.

Deutliche Worte zum Kin-Desaster gibt es von einem Microsoft-Insider, der verständlicherweise anonym bleiben will:

"We had a huge launch party on campus and I bet that party cost more than the amount of revenues we took in on the product. As an employee, I am embarrassed. As a shareholder, I am pissed. It's one thing to incubate products and bring them to a proof-of-concept to see what works, but it's something else to launch. I suspect we launched because we felt like we HAD to so we could save face because we were trying to build buzz, but overall - huge fail.”
